About Granny Flats in Victoria

Granny flats in Victoria are regulated by law and more formally called a Dependent Person's Unit (DPU). As the name implies, only one person may live in a granny flat, and that person must be a dependent of the main house's occupiers, usually because of an economic, social, or medical disadvantage.


Under current Victorian building laws, several requirements apply to granny flats (DPU's) and must be considered when you plan on adding one to your house.


The DPU may only be built on a property with a minimum size of 450m², and its construction must consider normal building restrictions. The DPU must be self-contained, with its own toilet, bath or shower, kitchen and living area. It must also have its own separate entrance. The sewerage and water services of the DPU must be shared with the primary house and not require its own points with municipal reticulation.


Finally, the DPU must be built so that it is movable or removable, as it must be removed as soon as the dependent ceases living in it. It is not legal to utilise the old granny flat for other purposes, like a hobby room or to rent it out for an extra income.

This 1900s era Edwardian treasure was restored to its original glory.

This home was a heavily dilapidated period home with a Heritage overlay. The home underwent a full refurbishment with all floors restumped, house rewired and re-plumbed, plastered, re-roofed and completely fitted out with brand new high end finishes and appliances. The house was completely restored whilst maintaining a very authentic period look and feel. This project was designed by Strikon and all interior selection was also carried out by our team. Mount Gisborne Rd

A large extension was added to this cozy country home, creating a practical haven for a growing family.

This home was extended to create a contemporary extension to the already generous home. A feature requirement of the brief was to create a very obvious natural stone spine wall separating the existing from the contemporary addition by building designer Gisborne. The areas included in the extension were a large Family/Entertaining area with a high vaulted ceilings enhancing the south west views. A focal feature of the new extension was a 4.5m high custom curtain wall glazing system to enhance the outlook over the vast paddocks and grassland. Other additions comprised of a generous polished concrete Entry with semi frameless windows, Mud room and Grand Garage for viewing of luxury cars

Alcheringa Court

Additional standalone Garage/Games Room and extension to new Family Room

A local enhancement to a growing family's requirement for more space. As this was originally built to suit a home created for a young family, the updated brief was to suit teenagers and allow the family more space. This was a challenging site given minimal access and poor site soil conditions. Nonetheless, this was overcome with our experienced planning in adverse environments and a focus on progress.
